Model DU230 Bedding Disposal Unit
1.0 General Description 1.1 The bedding disposal unit shall be used to dispose of used bedding from laboratory animal cages. It be a stand-alone unit, capable of grinding used bedding and other matter normally found in used animal caging, mixing the material with cold water and flushing the resulting slurry into the sanitary sewer. The unit shall be based upon a commercially available grinding unit manufactured by a United States manufacturer with a wide distribution and service network, such as the Insinkerator® Company. 2.0 Dimensions:
NOTE: DU23(X)-HI unit shall be hopper-integrated to a new tunnel washer. The (x) shall be replaced with the appropriate numeral to complete the model number. 3.0 Operation: 3.1 Cages with used bedding materials shall be upended and emptied into the hopper area. A rinse wand supplied with cold water shall be available to remove additional soil from cages as necessary. 3.2 All bedding and other materials from the cages shall be finely ground and mixed with water. The resulting slurry shall be conducted to the building sanitary drain connection. 4.0 Details of Construction: 4.1 The body, frame and all structural parts of the unit shall be heavy-gauge stainless steel or appropriate non-corroding materials. 4.2 A heavy-duty grating shall be installed over the sink area to allow cages to be emptied. The grating shall be removable for cleaning.
4.4 Bedding grinder shall be a standard commercial-industrial unit manufactured by Insinkerator® and sized appropriately for the anticipated load. 50.0 Optional Features: 50.1 Dust Collector: The disposal unit shall be provided with a dust collection system able to remove and filter dust to 50 microns generated by the operation. This system shall consist of a high-velocity downdraft duct and dust collector. Dust collector shall consist of a 1.0 HP (745.70 W)blower and 36 (136.27 L) gallon container connected to the vent of the disposer by flexible hose. Dust collector shall be integrally wired with the disposal and an ON/OFF switch shall be provided and mounted on the operator control panel. 50.2 Hopper Integration: Unit shall be integrated withy the infeeding end of a tunnel washer. All effluent shall be fed through tunnel washer drains. All controls shall be integrated with the tunnel washer controls. 50.3 Fused Disconnect Switch: A NEMA 4X fuseable disconnect switch shall be provided and mounted alongside the electrical enclosure. 60.0 Utilities
